Family Service Rochester calls for more Meals on Wheels volunteers
ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – Rochester Family Service needs more volunteers to deliver Meals on Wheels to housebound residents in our area.
Meals on Wheels delivers hot meals 7 days a week to people in need who may be housebound, such as the elderly or people with disabilities.
Family Service Rochester says it has two to four routes a day that need to be filled by volunteers.
You can help as much as your time allows.
Volunteers use their own vehicle and must be licensed and insured.
“Meals on Wheels has been part of the Rochester community through Family Service Rochester for over 50 years and was born out of people’s need to be able to have a nutritious meal delivered to them,” Family Service Rochester Innovation & Collaboration Director April Sutor said. .
Current volunteers say it’s a great way to give back to the community.
“We all have to give back to the community and we have to pay for it, because one day we will be where we have to ask for help, which is hard to do,” Family Service Rochester volunteer Connie Benjamin, said. “But there is a blessing to be given and there is a blessing to be received. And so I’m here to be the giver for now because later I’ll be the receiver.
Meals on Wheels delivers more than 30,000 meals a year to nearly 300 seniors in the Rochester community.
Family Service Rochester says that number has increased throughout the pandemic by 4,000 to 5,000 additional meals per year.
