The Progressive Democratic Party (DPP) has called on President Lazarus Chakwera to kick his extended family members out of State House, saying they are feasting on public resources.

The party requested it in a statement signed by party spokesman Shadreck Namalomba, who is also a member of parliament for Mangochi Southwest.

According to Namalomba, only the president’s wife and children under the age of 18 are allowed to live with the president on a self-service basis.

Among other requests in the statement, Namalomba said the president should reduce the size of his cabinet which currently has 31 members, including Chakwera and Vice President Saulos Chilima.

Namalomba added that the president should reduce the number of his advisers, reduce travel, provide rescue funds for small and medium-sized businesses, grant cash transfers to vulnerable people and remove the value-added tax on essential goods. .

On Monday, President Chakwera presented his government’s economic stimulus plan which will be implemented by 2023.

The president said he was already reducing his travel plans for the recovery period and he called on ministries to do the same.

He added that the plan aims to develop agricultural production, support private sector actors operating in productive sectors with high export potential and intensify efforts to immunize the population of Malawi.
